  • Fertility study horses are wild horses (aka mustangs, estrays, Comstock) gathered from the Virginia range in Nevada and were used by the vet school in Nevada/Reno through the Dept of Ag to study various pregnancy prevention products looking for a use to help control wild horses. The grant money ran out, and through a series of events the horses ended up at our ranch - 33 of them. From this group there were 2 aborted foals, 1 stillborn colt, 1 filly (aka Hope) died after 1 week, 2 more fillies that are healthy, and Carson. The stallions have been gelded and are at various locations in Nevada. This is Carson's story...

Carson and His Friends

Carson has met a lot of great friends in his short journey.  He’d like you to meet them, too.

calvinHey Carson, this is Calvin.  I hope you are feeling better tonight.  We’re kinda like brothers, you know.  Don’t you think.  I hope you get better so that maybe someday we can get together and play.  I get lonely sometimes.  I just have these dogs and they don’t know how to play.

Your Friend,

Please, please let us know Carson is OK……………
Calvin died this morning. I am so upset. But now he is with his mom

Hey Carson – this is Calvin – just checking in to see how things are going with you.  I heard you have a futon.  That’s really cool.  Except – what’s a futon?

I’m still my mama’s best boy and we are going to be together forever.   I like that.  I watch over everybody a lot.  Even little Wilbur.  He has some serious ears.  Are those futons, do you think?

Anyway, gotta go – my mama says we have to go look at the angel parade – they make lots of swoopy noise with their wings.

Oh, and Carson, even though we never got the chance to play together, anytime you see a rainbow, look up – you’ll see me. I’ll be watching for you.  And let me know about the futon, k?

Your friend,

Hi Calvin

I saw you this morning when I woke up.  I ran to my sisters and told them to look up.  We were so happy that you were close by.  I got to run and play with my sisters for a long time today while my mommy took 2 horses to new homes.  Did you see me run and kick my legs up?  I can kick real high now.  Mommy tells me to behave when we are walking so I love to visit my sisters.IMG_9915

Both of the big horses that left today were my friends and I got to bite on their necks and say goodbye.  It’s hard to say goodbye.  That’s why my mommy let me come play.

I jumped up on my big sister to get her to play with me but she didn’t like me biting her so she kicked me.  But I ran real fast so she didn’t hurt me.  My little sister took off running too so I went and played with her.  When mommy came home I had been playing in our big water hole – I think she calls it a pond.  There’s a lot of funny things that jump up & down and make funny noises.  I ran to the water and they jumped away.

I just finished dinner so mommy says I have to go bed so I’m going out to the barn with grandma and grandpa now.  I’ll look up and say goodnight to you before I go to sleep.

I’m so glad we’re bestest friends.  It’s nice to know you’re watching over me.

Goodnight, Calvin

Your bestest friend

Oh, yea — mommy won’t let me sleep on the futon anymore.  It’s so soft.  I like it better than my blanket.  But, she says I’m too big now.  She put some straw down instead.  But I peed on it cuz I don’t want to sleep on it.  Mommy wasn’t happy with me.  But grandma and grandpa said it was ok.  Grandpa taught me how to do that.

Hey Carson – I did see you playing with your sisters and biting those bigger horses on the neck.  That looks like a lot of fun.  And yeah, I saw you running and kicking up your heels.  You rock, Carson!!!

Sorry about the futon.  It sounds like it was a good place to sleep.  Maybe your Mommy could get you a bigger one.

The water hole sounds really neat too.  That must have been a lot of fun.  What do you suppose those jumping up and down things were?

Well, I gotta go, my Mom wants me to check out the rainbow on the other side – she says Miss Iza Valentine needs watching over right now.

Oh, and that Wilbur just cracks me up.  He thinks he’s a race horse.  Well – maybe it could happen.  Miracles happen all the time.

I’ll be watching over you.

Your Bestest Friend,

LOVE, Calvin

WilburCalvin — did you see those ears on Wilbur?  I like him.  Mommy is trying to get money to buy me good food and pay my doctor – I like him too – and Wilbur’s picture is with all the other horse pictures.  I hope he gets to be in the picture book mommy is making.  Auntie Laura is going to make a real neat picture too.

Hey, mommy said while you are watching the Angel Parade or keeping an eye out on Miss Iza would you look#5 (aka Hope) for my baby sister?  Mommy calls her #5.  I didn’t get to play with her because mommy said she was pretty sick when she got here and now she’s playing with the bridge or the rainbow or something like that and that she is suppose to be somewhere watching the Angels too.   Let me know if you see her.  Mommy gave me this picture to show you.  I’ll bet she will run and buck and play with you.  That will be so cool

It’s been hard here this year and it makes mommy sad.  She said that there were suppose to be 7 of us but only my sisters and I are here.  She showed me where she put a pretty wooden thing she calls a bridge for my brothers and #5.  Maybe that’s the bridge she was talking about.

Anyway, I hope you are having fun.  Do you have anyone else to play with?  Maybe someday we can run and play and bite each other.

Gotta go.  Mommy says I have to take a nap now.

BFF – bestest friends forever.

Hey Carson – it’s me Calvin again.  I’m glad you sent me the picture of #5 – because I play with her and some others just about everyday.  Her name up here is HOPE – My Mom says Hope is what love is about.  That and believing.  Never stop believing.

Just like Wilbur – I like watching him – he makes me laugh.  He believes he’s a race horse – and that is a good thing.  And what’s even better is that he makes Momma Lin laugh again and that makes me feel really really good.

That picture book sounds really really good.  Maybe Momma Lin will put my picture in it.  That would be cool.

My Mom says I have to rest now too.  It’s been a long day watching over all of my friends.  But Carson, you are my BFF.

your Bestest Friend Forever,

CALVIN! CALVIN!  Did you see that thing on Wilbur’s head.  My mommy put one of those on me.   It made me scratch a lot.  Don’t tell Wilbur but my mommy has one of those things that goes all the way around my head.  I don’t like it either.

Thank you for finding #5 and playing with her.  I’ll tell mommy her new name.  That is a nice name.

Sleep good.

Yes – I did see that thing on Wilbur’s head – I laughed so hard I fell right off of the cloud I was standing on and landed on top of this scruffy looking guy on the cloud below me.  He said his name was Carey and he was a dog.

Anyway, me and HOPE are going to go watch Wilbur some more today to see what else goes along with those EARS on his head.

I have to check in on Miss Iza too to make sure she is eating all her food, cause my Mom told me that Miss Iza needs to eat cause she still has someone she’s going to have to look after.

Well, my Mom is wanting me to come with her right now.

your bestest friend and still my Mom’s best boy

Oh no Calvin — look what my daddy brought home today.  I don’t know what they are but they keep hitting me in the tummy so I kicked one and mommy scolded me and made me get out of the barn.  They make this funny sound.  It was so scary.IMG_0005

Mommy says that they are only a week old.  I don’t know what that means but she said that these mean people took these things away from their mommys and were letting them get really really hungry and wouldn’t give them any milk like mommy gave me and that one may go to see you.

Mommy and daddy gave them bottles like they gave me and my mommy won’t let me lick it.

I don’t know Calvin.  Mommy calls me a big boy now cuz I’m 3 months old now and these things are smaller than me.  Mommy says I can play with them if I be nice.  But I just don’t know Calvin.  They run funny.IMG_0001

Hey Carson,

It’s me Calvin here.  Sorry I haven’t talked to you for awhile – been kind of busy looking after Miss Iza, then on Theresa -Tonka’s here too.  But anyrate – those things are really funny.  I think they are COWS.  Do they get to sleep on your futon?  Did you ask your Mom for a bigger FUTON – maybe since you got those cows now – she’ll get you one.

Did you see where Wilbur got to go to the fair?  You’d think nobody had ever seens ears before!  HA HA!  But he sure had fun.

Now back to those cows.  That’s really nice of your mommy and daddy to take care of them.  It’s bad when you’re hungry.  What sound do they make?  Maybe they run funny cause they’re hungry.  I don’t know.  I haven’t seen any cows up here, though.  At least I don’t think so.

Maybe if you share your futon – they’ll share their bottle with you!  Well, I gotta go.

Your very best friend forever,

ps – do they have big ears too?  Like Wilbur?  Maybe big ears are spreading.

Auntie LauraCALVIN! CALVIN! CALVIN! Guess what? Carson let me share his futon! Please let #5 know that Carson does his job very well… He is very good at explaining the issues that surround those Range horses and what happened to his mom and all the others. He is such a sweet boy… but makes his message very clear… Cookies! Well… not that message,,, But reminding us that the horses come first! Be Well Calvin… so glad you are watching over Carson!

Hey there – I will – and Hope (#5) sends her love as well.  It’s important to explain things like that, my momma told me.  Cause not everybody understands.  Hope says maybe someday they all will understand and bad things won’t happen anymore.

Good night – and I like looking in on Carson – cause he’s my bestest friend forever

Hi Calvin

How are you?  I am sorry I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t had a chance to use mommys puter to talk to you.

Remember those things that my daddy brought home.  Mommy said they are calves.  They are using my bottle Calvin.

Mommy got mad cuz I took one away from her and ran with it.  She said that it had special milk for the calves but I liked it too.

I got to go play with them cuz I was being nice.   Mommy said I’m a natural cutting horse, whatever that is.

I just like to run with them and lick their faces when they are done eating.  See how high I can kick?

IMG_0049I have 2 friends here.  Did you see them?  Brian was a baby last year and he and Bucky and I get to play together.  Bucky is the oldest.  I was racing the tractor yesterday and Brian was running with me.  Did you see how fast he can run?  Woo – almost as fastest as Wilbur.  Brian spends a lot of time with his mommy right now because her bestest friend left for a new home and she is real sad.  Brian likes to be with his mommy anyway.Bucky has been teaching me how to be a big boy but mommy says he is naughty because he took me for a long long walk and I didn’t come when she called.  It was fun though.  But mommy said these dog things that are mean are here and that they killed one of the baby deers where my sisters used to play so she doesn’t want me gone too far.  But Bucky said he’d take care of me.
You’ll watch me too won’t you Calvin?  So, what have you been doing.  I hope you are having fun.  Bite my sister for me cuz my sisters here won’t let me.  They kicked me real hard.
Me & Bucky

Me & Bucky

Write to me when you can ok.

Your BFF ever

Hey Carson – yeah!!!  That looks like a lot of fun!  Those calves are sure funny looking, aren’t they!  Don’t let them teach you how to cow kick, tho, cause I don’t think your Momma will like that.  Your new friends are awesome and I bet you have a lot of fun with them too!  Say – did your Momma get you a new bigger futon?  Since you’re being nice with the funny looking spotty things?  LOL!

And did you see how big that Wilbur is getting?  Hey – he has his own email now so if you get on your Mommie’s puter thingy again, maybe you could email him.

I’ve been busy – me and Hope are busy meeting all the new friends up here.  They’re pretty cool too.  We just met Annie Mae.  At first she was a little sad ’cause she was worrying about her friends, but we told her they would all be ok.  She is teaching me and Hope how to dance.  We don’t have any silver shoes, but Annie Mae said that was ok.  Oh, and we’re waiting to meet the Queen, too.  Miz Iza.   You be sure and tell Miz Iza’s friends that we’ll take good care of her, cause she is real special.

Well gotta go.  Miz Annie says we are going to learn the rhumba today – don’t know what that is, but it sounds fun.

your BFF
